Merry Christmas From West Ridge Academy

Bethlehem Star half sizeIf you have a teen that is struggling, there may be a dark shadow cast over your holiday celebrations. We at West Ridge Academy hope the Light of Christ will fill your hearts with comfort. We know that it is through the Savior that all things can be reconciled. Broken hearts can be mended. Estranged relationships can be made close again. Love can fill our hearts. Sometimes it takes heartache, time, and tough decisions to reach that point. At this time of year however, we are reminded that Christ assures us of the hope of a better future.

Merry Christmas from all of us at West Ridge Academy

SPORTS UPDATE – Lady Eagles Show Improvement, But Fall To Tintic

Destiny and Jamie Fight for a reboundMonday night the Tintic Lady Miners came to the Eagle’s Nest to face our girls basketball team. We played Tintic early in the season. that was our first road game and for those who remember, we won the JV game, but lost the Varsity game pretty badly. We were excited to play them to see how much we have improved.

The JV game was exciting. We started slow in the first half. Baily F. scored 4 points in the first quarter (she finished with 14 for the game) and that was all we could get in the first half. The score at the end of the half was 13 -4.  The second half of the game was an entirely different story. Our JV girls played great defense holding the Lady Miners to only 3 points in the entire second half. Unfortunately we fell short in this game by one point. Final score 16 – 15. That is the second game in a row that the JV girls have played really well in the second half to close to within one basket at the end of the game. Hopefully in the future we can play an entire game that way.

The Varsity  girls started even slower in the first half. We were actually scroeless in the first 2 quarters. We had plenty of good looks at the basket, but we started the game 0 for 19 shooting. We also missed 8 free throws. That being said, we were only down by 11 at halftime. Our girls were playing great defense and had their best game rebounding the basketball. We scored the first 7 points in the 3rd quarter. I thought we were going to make a push and be able to take the lead. That was the closest we would get however as Tintic took the momentum back. The 4th quarter was our first quarter of the season scoring in double figures. Destiny S. scored the final points of the game at the last second , scoring a put back layup as time expired.

Scorers: Alexa L. (12), Destiny S. (2), Stephanie S. (2), Michaela B. (2)

We are happy with the progress that the girls are making. the first time we played Tintic the final score was 40 – 8. Monday night the score was 27 – 18. We still have potential to play better and we are excited about our last two games before Christmas Break.

We play tonight (Thurs. 17) at home against Taylorsville’s Sophomore team, and we play on Friday night at Salt Lake Lutheran. Wish us luck.

The importance of adding vision to the acknowledgement that you give them.

The hidden message that you are giving your teen when you “butter them up”.

How asking the right questions can help get them thinking differently than they have been.

SPORTS UPDATE – Girls Basketball Suffers Losses to Wasatch and Wendover

P1010305smallLast week our girls basketball team played games against Wasatch Academy and Wendover High School. We had played Wasatch the week before and were looking forward to playing hem again to see if we had improved over the last couple of weeks. We had improved. The final score of the Varsity game (49 – 25) was not much different than the game the previous week. What was different was the way our girls played. It was fun to see them work together offensively. The ball movement around the perimeter was very good. The good perimeter ball movement allowed good entry passes to Alexa L. in the middle. Alexa finished the night with 18 points. Other scorers were Jessi O. (4) and Ellice A. (3).
The game against Wendover seemed like a step backward for us. The JV game was costly as we lost two of our players to injury. The girls played hard, despite the injuries. The final score of the JV game was 29 – 10. Because of the injuries in the JV game, we were short two substitutes in the Varsity game. That made play difficult for the starters because they ended up playing a lot of minutes. Our offense never was able to get going and we were only able to score 6 points, all from Michaela B. The girls never quit, even when they were down by a lot. They kept working and playing hard. The official at the end of the game made a special comment about that. I am proud of our girls for playing hard and never giving up.

PARENT QUESTIONS – How Can I Get My Child to Understand That ‘No’ Means ‘No’?

Don’t engage in her repeated request.  If ‘no’ is ‘no’ then that should be the end of the discussion.  What your teen is trying to do is wear you out so you will give in.  So, don’t ever give in.  Your child wants to put you on trial to convince them why the answer to their request is no. You are not on trial, and you don’t have to convince them.

Pushing Boundaries in this way is learned behavior. Both you and your child are responsible for the behavior.  So, as a parent it is helpful to unlearn what you have done to encourage this behavior.  Every time you give in to them, after they wear you down, reinforces their behavior.

If your child continues to ask you and hound you, give them consequences.  When my clients or children begin to do this, I give them 20 minutes of “hassle chores” for each time they ask. I don’t argue with them, and I don’t engage in explanations. I am not on trial; I just enforce the consequences.

A “hassle chore” is anything they can do such as: cleaning the toilet, the garage, organizing the pantry, washing base boards, etc.  Come up with a consequence that makes them think twice about repeating their request after you have said no. In closing, let me re-emphasize the importance of never giving in!

SPORTS UPDATE – Girls Basketball at Wasatch

Michaela B. looks to pass to Baily F.

Michaela B. looks to pass to Baily F.

Last night the Lady Eagles traveled to Mt. Pleasant Utah to play against the Wasatch Tigers. We lost both games, but the girls left in good spirits. There is progress being made. There were two girls that made their first games of the season. Jillaney U. and Rachel C. Both played very well. Jillaney scored her first 2 points in the JV game and Rachel was a rebounding machine.

The JV game started out very slowly for us. We were not able to score in the first quarter. The girls who were on the floor were timid about shooting the basketball. We were able to get a lot of shots off in the second and third quarters, but only one shot fell in each of those quarters.  Stephanie S. scored in the 2nd Quarter and Jillaney scored in the 3rd.  Our girls were able to outscore the Tigers in the 4th quarter 4 – 2. Stephanie S. and Bailey F. each scored 2 in the final quarter.  The final score of the game was 16 – 8.

The varsity team came out with a lot of intensity. However, we gave up a lot of turnovers and long rebounds which turned into fast break points for the Wasatch. We were able to reduce the fast break points in the second half, but by then the damage had been done and the deficit was too big to overcome. The final score of the varsity game was 49 – 19.

Scorers for the varsity game:

Alexa L.               6

Jesse O.                 3

Michaela B.         2

Cami D.               2

Ellice A.               4

Baily F.                2
